Where it came from
Shrouded Lore was released in February 2007 as part of the Planar Chaos expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As the middle set in the Time Spiral block, Planar Chaos explored an alternate-reality timeline where color pie identities were reimagined, allowing mechanics usually reserved for one color to bleed into others. This card specifically reflects that design philosophy by shifting a traditional black effect into a red frame, emphasizing the chaotic and unpredictable nature of the set's central narrative conceit.
The card’s illustration was created by artist Heather Hudson, a longtime contributor to the game known for her whimsical yet detailed aesthetic. For this piece, she was tasked with depicting the act of recovering forgotten or forbidden knowledge, resulting in imagery that aligns with the dark, scholarly tone established by the set's lead designers. Upon release, the card was received as a niche utility tool, primarily noted by players for its ability to manipulate graveyard recursion in non-traditional ways within the red color identity.
