Shu Farmer

Shu Farmer was released in 1999 as part of the Portal Three Kingdoms set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. This set was unique in its time for being designed primarily for the Asian market, drawing heavy inspiration from the 14th-century Chinese historical novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms. The set was created to introduce new players to the game mechanics in simplified terms, while also providing a localized flavor that resonated with players familiar with the classic epic.

The artwork for this card was provided by Li Xiaohua, a Chinese illustrator tasked with capturing the humble, grounded nature of the Shu region's agrarian life. The design reflects the set's mandate for accessible, straightforward gameplay, depicting a peasant figure rather than the grand generals and warriors that populate much of the rest of the set. While common in rarity, the card has since gained interest among collectors for its specific place in Wizards of the Coast's regional experiments during the late 1990s.
