Where it came from
The Shu Foot Soldiers card was released in 1999 as part of the Portal Three Kingdoms set. This set was uniquely designed by Wizards of the Coast to introduce the mechanics of Magic: The Gathering to the Asian market, specifically focusing on the historical and literary themes of the 14th-century Chinese epic, Romance of the Three Kingdoms. It served as a streamlined entry point for new players, utilizing simplified rules that differed from the standard core sets of the era.
The art for the card captures the aesthetic established for the Shu Han faction, led by the historical figure Liu Bei. The design work, while illustrative of the period's military style, was part of a broader artistic initiative to contextualize the game's fantasy elements within Chinese history. Although the set was initially limited in its release and distribution, it has since become a significant interest for collectors due to its distinct cultural theme and the unique, simplified gameplay experience it offered during the late 1990s.
