Provenance

Where it came from

Shuko was released in 2005 as part of the Betrayers of Kamigawa expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Set in a fantasy world heavily inspired by feudal Japanese folklore and mythology, the card represents a specialized martial arts weapon. It was designed to function within the set’s mechanics, specifically interacting with creatures that had the ability to equip gear in combat scenarios.

The card’s illustration was crafted by the renowned fantasy artist Greg Hildebrandt, one half of the famous Brothers Hildebrandt. Known for his work on the original Star Wars movie posters and The Lord of the Rings, Hildebrandt utilized his signature detailed, painterly style to bring the cold, metallic essence of the weapon to life. Upon release, the card was received as a functional utility piece, finding its place in various deck builds that prioritized low-cost equipment.
