Where it came from
Sift was released in 2018 as part of the Core Set 2019 expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Core sets serve as a foundational entry point for new players and often include reprints alongside new designs to establish or reinforce the mechanical identity of the game's five color factions. As a blue sorcery card, Sift was designed to provide card advantage, allowing players to draw cards and discard others, a classic effect that reflects the strategic, knowledge-seeking nature of blue magic.
The artwork for this specific iteration was created by the illustrator Igor Kieryluk, whose work frequently appears across various sets in the game. Kieryluk’s design for Sift captures the essence of arcane research and scholarly investigation, utilizing a palette and composition that emphasize the focus required to filter through information. Upon its release, the card was received as a functional, utilitarian tool for Limited formats, praised for its efficiency in smoothing out a player's hand during the mid-to-late stages of a game.
