Where it came from
Sift was originally released in the 2002 Scourge expansion for Magic: The Gathering, designed by Wizards of the Coast to provide players with a common-rarity blue sorcery capable of card selection and graveyard filling. The card reflects the set's focus on the cyclical nature of life and death, mechanics central to the storyline of the Mirari and the transformation of Karona. Its inclusion in Masters 25, a set released in 2018 to celebrate the twenty-fifth anniversary of the game, was intended to showcase a breadth of mechanics across Magic's history.
The artwork for this reprint features the classic illustration by Dan Scott, who was commissioned to capture the theme of divining knowledge from the remnants of history. Masters 25 was curated to provide a retrospective experience for veteran players, featuring a mix of iconic reprints and functional staples. Sift served as a utility piece in the set’s Limited environment, valued for its ability to smooth out draws and set up graveyard-based strategies, maintaining the consistent design philosophy established during its initial printing.
