Where it came from
The Sigardian Evangel was released in 2024 as part of Mystery Booster 2, a curated set designed by Wizards of the Coast to celebrate the history of Magic: The Gathering. This specific card serves as a thematic inclusion within the set's unique, randomized draft experience, drawing heavily on the gothic horror aesthetic of the Innistrad plane. It reflects the set's goal of showcasing cards that evoke the atmospheric tension and religious imagery associated with Sigarda, the angel protector of humanity in the game's lore.
The design of the card leans into the established visual language of the Avacynian church, utilizing dramatic lighting and iconic ecclesiastical motifs consistent with the Innistrad block's artistic direction. As a modern addition to a retrospective set, it functions as a tribute to the long-standing design philosophies that emphasize creature-based combat and tribal synergies. Within the community, Mystery Booster 2 is recognized for its eclectic mix of reprints and special frame treatments, and the Sigardian Evangel is framed as a functional piece within that complex, meta-focused environment.
