Where it came from
Sign in Blood was originally released as an uncommon in the 2009 Magic: The Gathering core set, designed to provide black players with a distinct form of card advantage by trading life for draw potential. This specific version was issued as a promotional card for the 2010 Magic Player Rewards program, which incentivized tournament participation by mailing cards to active players based on their quarterly event attendance.
The 2010 promotional printing features new artwork by artist Cyril Van Der Haegen, who opted for a visceral, gothic aesthetic that emphasizes the card's theme of blood sacrifice. The piece was well-received by the player community for its atmospheric departure from the original illustration, becoming a notable collector's item for those who favor premium alternate-art versions of staple utility spells.
