Provenance

Where it came from

Signal Pest was first introduced in the Mirrodin Besieged set, released in 2011 as part of the Scars of Mirrodin block. It reflects the set's central conflict between the native inhabitants of the artificial plane of Mirrodin and the encroaching Phyrexian infection. The card represents a small, mechanical scout engineered to facilitate the spread of Phyrexian influence through the 'battle cry' mechanic, which mechanically simulates the coordinated advancement of the Phyrexian horde.

The artwork was provided by Mark Zug, a long-time contributor to the Magic: The Gathering franchise. Zug opted for a visceral, insectoid aesthetic that emphasizes the grotesque fusion of machine and organic matter typical of the Phyrexian aesthetic. Upon its release, the card became a significant staple in aggressive competitive decks due to its efficiency and the utility of its keyword ability, quickly establishing itself as a notable inclusion in the broader history of artifact-themed creature cards.
