Where it came from
Exclude was introduced as part of the inaugural iteration of The List, a curated collection of legacy Magic: The Gathering cards that began appearing in Set Boosters starting with Zendikar Rising. This specific printing originates from the Modern Horizons 1 expansion, serving as a representative example of the reprints wizards of the coast integrated into modern product lines to increase accessibility for players seeking older, staple effects.
The card was originally designed to provide a highly efficient, one-mana disruption tool, allowing players to counter target non-creature spells unless their controller pays an additional mana. Its design emphasizes the tempo-focused philosophy of blue control decks, and it has remained a consistent fixture in competitive formats like Legacy and Modern due to its versatility and ability to punish opponents who tap out their mana resources too aggressively.
