Where it came from
Sigurd, Jarl of Ravensthorpe (card 249) was released as part of the Magic: The Gathering 'Universes Beyond' set dedicated to the Assassin's Creed franchise. The set was designed to integrate the lore, characters, and aesthetic of the long-running video game series into the mechanics of the collectible card game. This particular card represents Sigurd Styrbjornsson, a central figure from Assassin's Creed Valhalla, depicting his role as a Norse leader and his connection to the game's broader mythological narrative.
The illustration was crafted to capture the stoic, battle-hardened appearance consistent with the character's depiction in Ubisoft's title. The design process focused on translating Sigurd’s leadership qualities into game mechanics, specifically through the 'Legendary Creature' designation. Upon its release, the card was received as a functional and thematic addition for players building tribal Viking-themed decks, serving as a bridge between fans of the tactical card game and the historical-fantasy audience of the source material.
