Where it came from
Silence the Believers was released in May 2014 as part of the Journey into Nyx set, the final expansion in the Theros block for Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed as a potent removal tool for the Limited and Standard environments, reflecting the block's focus on Greek mythology and the influence of the gods on the mortal realm. Its mechanics, specifically the ability to exile creatures and potentially remove multiple targets through its strive ability, were created to provide players with a versatile response to the heavy enchantment and heroic-themed creatures prevalent in the set.
The artwork for the card was created by Seb McKinnon, a prominent illustrator within the Magic: The Gathering community known for his ethereal and haunting visual style. McKinnon’s design aimed to capture the silence and divine retribution thematic to the card's name, depicting a scene of stark, somber magic that stands out for its lack of traditional high-fantasy saturation. The card was well-received by players for its utility in competitive play and remains a notable example of the artistic shift towards more evocative, atmospheric card illustrations in the mid-2010s.
