Where it came from
Tethmos High Priest was released in 2014 as part of the Journey into Nyx expansion, the final set in the Theros block for Magic: The Gathering. This set concluded the block’s narrative, which drew heavily from Greek mythology and the interaction between mortals and the pantheon of gods living in the starry realm of Nyx. The card depicts a member of the Returned, the undead inhabitants of the underworld who have discarded their identities to escape their torment, reflecting the set's themes of life, death, and resurrection.
The card was illustrated by Johannes Voss, who utilized the set's distinctive 'constellation' aesthetic to imbue the artwork with a dreamlike, ethereal quality. Voss designed the priest to embody a balance between somber death imagery and the divine magic characteristic of the Theros plane. Upon its release, the card became a staple in various white-based aggressive and mid-range decks within the Limited and Constructed formats, particularly prized for its ability to recur smaller creatures from the graveyard to the battlefield.
