Where it came from
Silkguard was released in 2022 as part of the Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty Commander set, a collection designed to complement the main Neon Dynasty expansion. The set draws heavily from a blend of traditional Japanese folklore and futuristic cyberpunk aesthetics, a theme Wizards of the Coast developed to reimagine the fan-favorite Kamigawa plane centuries into the future. The card was specifically crafted to support the set's green-aligned mechanics, focusing on protection and board presence through the use of hexproof counters.
The artwork for Silkguard, illustrated by Wisnutan, reflects the set's emphasis on the fusion of nature and technology. The visual design highlights the 'reconfigure' and artifact-creature motifs prevalent in the Neon Dynasty era, blending organic, shimmering flora with the clean, synthetic lines of the Kamigawa metropolis. Upon release, the card was well-received by the Commander community for its versatility as both a protective spell and an evolving threat, fitting neatly into aggressive go-wide strategies.
