Where it came from
The Silverback Elder, card 177p, was released as a promotional variant during the Dominaria United expansion for Magic: The Gathering in 2022. This card was designed as a powerful green creature meant to anchor the set's themes of nature and growth, and the promotional version was distributed through local game stores as a participation incentive for tournament play. The artwork, which depicts a massive, imposing gorilla, leans into the high-fantasy aesthetic characteristic of the Dominaria setting, intending to evoke a sense of ancient, untamed power.
The illustration was crafted to stand out in a foil-etched or special-frame treatment, a design choice meant to reward long-term collectors and players who frequent brick-and-mortar hobby shops. Within the competitive community, the card was widely received for its versatility and durability in play, quickly becoming a staple in various green-based deck archetypes. The promotional release was designed not just as a functional game piece, but as a celebratory item marking the return to one of the game's most iconic and storied settings.
