Where it came from
The Silverback Elder, appearing as card number 177s in the Dominaria United set, was released in 2022 as a special promotional variant. This card features unique borderless alternate art, a stylistic choice Wizards of the Coast utilizes to highlight key creatures within their Magic: The Gathering sets. The card design draws upon the lore of Dominaria, a classic plane in the game's multiverse, representing the primal, protective nature of the Kavu species during the atmospheric conflicts of the Dominaria United narrative.
The illustration for this particular promo was crafted to evoke a sense of imposing, natural grandeur, emphasizing the creature's status as an elder of its kind. As part of the promotional cycle for the set, it was distributed through various organized play channels, intended to reward players for their participation in local community events. It was well-received by collectors who favor the set's high-fantasy aesthetic and functional utility in green-aligned deck strategies.
