Sinkhole

Sinkhole was first released as part of the Alpha set in 1993, later appearing in the Unlimited Edition, which was the first white-bordered reprint of the original Magic: The Gathering cards. Designed by Richard Garfield and illustrated by Quinton Hoover, the card was created to provide black-aligned players with an efficient way to disrupt an opponent's mana base by destroying a land. Its design reflected the game's early philosophy of high-impact, low-cost spells that could swing the momentum of a game quickly.

Quinton Hoover’s illustration for Sinkhole remains one of the most recognizable pieces of early Magic art, capturing a visceral sense of environmental collapse. Upon its release, the card quickly gained a reputation for its potency in competitive play, becoming a cornerstone of the 'land destruction' archetype.
