What it does
At the beginning of each end step, each player discards their hand.
Its victims become mindless lunatics. Conveniently, that's the first step in joining the Cult of Rakdos.

Where it came from
Sire of Insanity was released in May 2013 as part of the Dragon's Maze expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As a mythic rare creature representing a hybrid of the Rakdos guild's chaos and the Dimir guild's psychological manipulation, the card was designed to force players to discard their hands, effectively resetting the game state. This mechanical design reflects the block's focus on guild interaction and the volatile, disruptive nature associated with the Red and Black color identity.
The card’s illustration was created by artist Greg Staples, known for his atmospheric and gritty portrayal of dark fantasy creatures. Staples sought to capture the visceral, overwhelming presence of a demon capable of shattering both physical and mental order. Upon its release, the card saw immediate competitive play, particularly in formats like Modern and Commander, where its ability to instantly neutralize an opponent's resources remains a potent strategic tool.
