Provenance

Where it came from

Sisters of Stone Death was released in 2005 as part of the Ravnica: City of Guilds set, the first installment of a block centered on the urban, multicolored plane of Ravnica. The card was designed to represent the leaders of the Golgari Swarm, one of the ten guilds, and was built as a high-cost, high-impact creature that embodied the guild's mechanical identity of recycling resources from the graveyard and interacting with the battlefield.

The artwork was commissioned from Donato Giancola, a celebrated fantasy illustrator known for his mastery of light and classical composition. Giancola captured the formidable nature of the gorgon trio by emphasizing their petrifying power and collective presence, leaning into the darker, earthy aesthetic of the Golgari. The design was well-received by players for its thematic resonance with the guild's lore, establishing the Sisters as an iconic, albeit mana-intensive, commander-style card.
