Where it came from
Sister Repentia was released as part of the Warhammer 40,000 Commander deck series for Magic: The Gathering, a collaboration between Wizards of the Coast and Games Workshop. Introduced in 2022, this set was designed to integrate the grimdark aesthetic of the Warhammer 40,000 universe into the mechanics of Magic. The card features a Sister of Battle, a member of the Adepta Sororitas who has sought redemption for perceived failures through ritualistic penance and extreme combat.
The artwork for this specific card was commissioned to reflect the visceral and monastic intensity characteristic of the Sisters of Battle. By depicting the Sister Repentia in her iconic state of ascetic zeal, the design team aimed to capture the essence of her lore—a warrior stripped of armor, wielding an eviscerator, and seeking an honorable death in the service of the Emperor. The card was well-received by fans of both games for its faithful translation of the character's thematic weight into a functional trading card.
