Where it came from
Skeletal Swarming was released in 2021 as part of the Adventures in the Forgotten Realms set, a collaboration between Magic: The Gathering and the Dungeons & Dragons franchise. The card was designed to mechanically represent the classic D&D monster trope of a growing, relentless undead horde, forcing players to manage an ever-increasing board presence that gains power through the death of other creatures.
The artwork for this specific promotional version was created by Johannes Voss. Known for his expressive and emotive illustration style, Voss aimed to capture the swarm's chaotic energy and the unsettling nature of the skeletal legion. Upon release, the card was well-received by players for its flavor-rich design, which successfully translated a tabletop RPG mechanic into the card game's engine.
