Where it came from
The Book of Exalted Deeds was released as part of the Magic: The Gathering set Adventures in the Forgotten Realms in 2021, marking the game's official crossover with the Dungeons & Dragons tabletop role-playing system. The card serves as a mechanical adaptation of the legendary artifact from D&D lore, which traditionally serves as a sacred text containing the history of celestials and requiring a good-aligned character to read it. Its inclusion in the set was intended to evoke the high-fantasy aesthetic of the D&D source material for long-time players and fans of the franchise alike.
The card was illustrated by Titus Lunter, who focused on capturing the ethereal and divine nature of the book through a luminous, celestial color palette. In the competitive landscape of the game, the card gained significant notoriety shortly after its release due to its synergy with specific cards in the Standard format, leading to a temporary ban in certain digital play queues. This reaction cemented its status as a notable artifact within the broader set, blending its thematic role as a powerful relic with an impactful, if controversial, presence in tournament play.
