Where it came from
Skeleton Crew was introduced as part of the 'Ahoy Mateys' Commander deck within The Lost Caverns of Ixalan expansion, released by Wizards of the Coast in late 2023. The card was designed to support the set's thematic focus on the swashbuckling pirates and subterranean exploration of the plane of Ixalan, specifically mechanics that reward tribal synergies among skeletal creatures.
The card features illustration by artist Justine Cruz, who rendered the skeletal imagery to fit the macabre yet adventurous aesthetic of the set. It serves as an anthem-style enchantment that grants power bonuses and keyword abilities to skeletons, reflecting a design philosophy aimed at bolstering graveyard-reliant strategies and unconventional creature types in the Commander format.
