Where it came from
Skeletonize was released in 2008 as part of the Shards of Alara expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set focused on the plane of Alara, which had been fractured into five distinct worlds, with Grixis—the world from which this card originates—defined by its lack of white and green mana and its preoccupation with death and undeath. The card was designed to mechanically represent the necromantic theme of Grixis, allowing a player to destroy a creature and replace it with a Skeleton token.
