Where it came from
Skewer the Critics was released in 2019 as part of the Magic: The Gathering set titled Ravnica Allegiance. As a card within the 'Breaking News' style cycle, it reflects the ongoing practice of reimagining classic spells with localized flavor and distinct artistic direction. The design leans into the thematic aesthetic of the Rakdos Cult, a chaotic and performance-obsessed guild within the Ravnica plane, emphasizing the card's function as a damaging spell that rewards aggressive playstyles.
The art and mechanical design were crafted to capture the essence of the 'spectacle' mechanic, which allows players to cast the spell for a reduced cost if an opponent has already taken damage that turn. By framing the card as a piece of sensationalist journalism—a common trope for the Breaking News subsets—the creative team sought to bridge the gap between high-fantasy combat and the urban, gritty environment of the city-plane. The card saw immediate play in various competitive formats due to its versatility and efficiency.
