Where it came from
Skirsdag High Priest was originally released in the 2011 Innistrad set, designed by the Magic: The Gathering development team to showcase the gothic horror themes and morbid mechanics central to that plane. The card depicts a human cultist dedicated to the demon Griselbrand, utilizing a triggered ability that rewards players for sacrificing creatures to summon powerful demon tokens. This synergy captured the sacrifice-heavy identity of the black color alignment within the set's mechanical framework.
The Double Masters iteration, featuring the collector number 106, utilizes the original artwork by Aleksi Briclot. Briclot’s design focuses on the ominous, ritualistic atmosphere of the Skirsdag cult, employing high-contrast lighting and shadows to emphasize the character's unsettling devotion. This version was included in the 2020 Double Masters reprint set, which sought to bring iconic and mechanically significant cards back into circulation for established players, receiving a generally positive reception for its thematic consistency and utility in Commander and cube formats.
