Where it came from
Skirsdag High Priest originally debuted in the 2011 Innistrad set, designed to embody the dark, gothic horror aesthetic of that world. The card centers on the mechanics of the Cult of Skirsdag, a fanatical group within the lore dedicated to the archdemon Griselbrand. By sacrificing lesser creatures, the priest facilitates the arrival of a powerful demon token, mechanically representing the cult's morbid devotion to their infernal masters.
The Jumpstart 2022 version features the signature illustration by Johannes Voss, whose work on the card captures the unsettling, ritualistic atmosphere typical of the Innistrad plane. As part of the Jumpstart series, this printing was intended to provide accessible, thematic gameplay for players, placing the priest within a synergistic tribal context that emphasizes sacrifice and graveyard-focused strategies.
