Where it came from
Skithiryx, the Blight Dragon is a legendary creature card from the Magic: The Gathering set Scars of Mirrodin, released by Wizards of the Coast in 2010. Designed by the development team to showcase the 'infect' mechanic, the dragon represents the Phyrexian corruption of the metallic plane of Mirrodin. It serves as a central antagonist figure within the narrative of the Scars of Mirrodin block, embodying the creeping biological and mechanical assimilation orchestrated by the Phyrexians.
The card’s striking visual identity was crafted by artist Chippy, a veteran contributor to the game known for his atmospheric and grotesque aesthetic. His design for Skithiryx emphasizes the fusion of organic dragon anatomy with the jagged, industrial features characteristic of Phyrexian design. Upon its release, the card was widely received as a powerful and iconic commander for infect-themed decks, appreciated by players for its efficient combination of haste, regeneration, and the ability to apply poison counters directly to opponents.
