Where it came from
Skittering Cicada was released in 2023 as part of the Commander Masters expansion for Magic: The Gathering. This set was designed specifically to celebrate the Commander format by reprinting highly sought-after cards and introducing new designs tailored to multiplayer gameplay. The inclusion of cards like this insect-themed creature reflects the set's broader goal of providing utility and synergy-heavy options for players looking to bolster their decks with efficient, creature-focused mechanics.
The card features artwork by illustrator Simon Bisley, a renowned figure in comic book art known for his visceral, high-contrast style. In designing this piece, the intent was to capture the unsettling, kinetic nature of the cicada within the game's fantasy aesthetic. While the card is a modern addition to the game's expansive library, it has been received by players as a functional niche piece that rewards specific strategies involving creature movement and flash-based interaction.
