Where it came from
The Skittering Cicada was released as part of the Commander Masters set in 2023, specifically designed to support the set's focus on powerful, high-mana-value strategies often found in the Commander format. It was created to provide utility in artifact-heavy decks, allowing players to manipulate the battlefield timing by granting flash to their artifact spells. This card fits into the broader Magic: The Gathering tradition of expanding mechanical complexity within specialized draft-focused expansions.
The card features artwork by Wisanu Tan, whose illustrative style emphasizes the insectoid, mechanical nature of the creature. The design reflects the 'Phyrexian' aesthetic often associated with the game's lore, showcasing intricate metallic textures and biological horror elements. Upon its release, it was noted by players for its efficiency in decks led by commanders that rely on rapid artifact deployment, solidifying its place as a tactical niche piece within the set's color-agnostic artifact support.
