Where it came from
Skittering Invasion was introduced as part of the Modern Horizons 3 Commander set, released in 2024. The card represents a design philosophy centered on bringing high-power, mechanics-focused cards from Modern-era Magic: The Gathering directly into the Commander format. It functions as a sorcery that generates a swarm of Eldrazi Spawn tokens, tapping into the set's broader thematic focus on the colorless Eldrazi entities and the ramp mechanics associated with them.
The artwork for this card continues the aesthetic of the Eldrazi as reality-warping, insectoid-like terrors. It was designed to support aggressive token-based strategies or to provide functional acceleration in colorless and specialized decks. Like many cards in the Modern Horizons series, it was received as a utility-heavy inclusion, favored by players looking to populate their boards efficiently while maintaining the unique mechanical identity of the Eldrazi faction.
