Where it came from
Skittering Invasion was released in 2010 as part of the Rise of the Eldrazi expansion for Magic: The Gathering. This set marked the conclusion of the Zendikar block, introducing the Eldrazi, an ancient, plane-consuming race of cosmic entities designed to represent a shift in the game's power scale and themes of overwhelming existential dread.
The card's art, created by Igor Kieryluk, leans into the Eldrazi aesthetic of asymmetrical, biomechanical monstrosities. It was intended to showcase the parasitic nature of the Eldrazi spawn, small tokens that players could sacrifice for mana to accelerate the summoning of larger, game-ending threats. Within the competitive landscape, it is remembered as a functional tool for ramp strategies during its time in the Standard format.
