Where it came from
The Skull Saucer is a silver-bordered artifact creature released in the 2017 Magic: The Gathering expansion set titled Unstable. This set was the third in a series of 'un-sets' designed by Wizards of the Coast to explore the humorous, experimental, and self-referential side of the game, existing outside of standard legal competitive formats to allow for mechanics that would otherwise be impossible to balance.
The card was illustrated by Victor Adame Minguez, who captured the quintessential aesthetic of 1950s B-movie science fiction. The design leans into the trope of the classic flying saucer piloted by an alien skull, serving as a playful commentary on the genre's intersection with the high-fantasy elements typical of the game. It was received as a charming addition to the set's campy, nostalgic atmosphere.
