Steamflogger Service Rep

Steamflogger Service Rep was released in 2017 as part of the Magic: The Gathering 'Unstable' expansion, an unconventional, silver-bordered set designed for casual play and humor. The card serves as a thematic nod to the long-standing community joke regarding the rules text of the card 'Steamflogger Boss,' which first appeared in 2007 and famously referenced 'Riggers' and 'Contraptions' long before those mechanics actually functioned within the game. By creating this card, the design team at Wizards of the Coast leaned into the meta-narrative of the set, offering a playful, self-referential answer to a decade-old mystery.

The artwork for this card was crafted by illustrator Matt Cavotta, who has been a staple of the Magic: The Gathering aesthetic for many years. Cavotta’s design captures the whimsical, industrial-fantasy atmosphere of the Unstable setting, depicting a character clearly overwhelmed by the technical bureaucracy of the game's nonsensical internal logic. Upon its release, the card was well-received by the player base for its ability to finally bridge the gap between early experimental design choices and the fully realized contraption-building mechanics introduced in the same set.
