Where it came from
Skyhunter Patrol was released in 2022 as part of the Jumpstart 2022 set for the collectible card game Magic: The Gathering. This set was designed to be played in a unique format where players combine two theme-based booster packs to create a functional deck, making it an ideal entry point for new players or a fast-paced experience for veterans. The set focused on reprinting iconic cards alongside new additions, with the artwork emphasizing dynamic, high-fantasy aesthetics consistent with the lore of the Magic multiverse.
The card features artwork by illustrator Anna Steinbauer, who is well known for her elegant and clean digital painting style. In this piece, she focuses on the feline-humanoid aesthetic typical of the Skyhunter race from the plane of Mirrodin. The design conveys the creature's role as an aerial sentinel, utilizing a color palette of gold and white to signify its allegiance to plains-based mana and its function as a vigilant guardian within the game's tactical combat system.
