Where it came from
Slaying Fire was released in 2019 as part of the Throne of Eldraine expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set drew heavily from Arthurian legend and Grimm's fairy tales, aiming to blend high-fantasy tropes with a whimsical, storybook aesthetic. Mechanically, the card serves as a versatile red burn spell, designed to provide players with a reliable removal option that scales in power when combined with the set's unique adamant keyword mechanic.
The card’s illustration was created by artist Randy Vargas, who utilized a vivid, painterly style to capture the dramatic moment of a fiery elemental strike. Vargas focused on dynamic lighting and bold color contrasts to emphasize the elemental nature of the spell. Upon release, the card was well-received by the competitive community for its utility in limited formats and its thematic alignment with the set's aggressive red-mana archetypes.
