Where it came from
Slaying Fire was released in 2019 as part of the Throne of Eldraine set for Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed as a thematic representation of the Arthurian and fairy-tale motifs that define the plane of Eldraine, specifically echoing the classic trope of a dragon-slaying hero or a knight overcoming a fire-breathing beast. Mechanically, it serves as a straightforward burn spell, providing players with a flexible way to deal damage to creatures or planeswalkers, reflecting the set's emphasis on high-impact sorcery and instant speed interactions.
The artwork, illustrated by Magali Villeneuve, captures a dramatic, high-fantasy aesthetic characteristic of her work within the game. Her design utilizes bold, warm tones to emphasize the intensity of the flames, aligning with the visual identity of red-aligned magic. Upon its release, the card was well-received by the player base for its utility in Limited formats, where the 'Adamant' mechanic allowed players to optimize the spell's effectiveness by committing specifically to red mana sources.
