Provenance

Where it came from

Sleep was originally printed in the Magic 2011 core set, released in July 2010. Designed as a blue sorcery, the card was intended to provide a powerful, high-impact effect for aggressive blue decks in the Limited and casual formats of the era. Its function reflects the classic color pie philosophy of blue, which utilizes stalling tactics and temporary board control to buy time for the player to assemble their victory conditions.

The artwork for this version was illustrated by the artist Dave Allsop, who opted for a surreal, dreamlike depiction of a figure falling into a state of slumber. The piece was well-received by players for its thematic resonance with the card's ability, which taps all creatures a target player controls. It became a staple of early 2010s Magic sets, often lauded for its ability to clear a path for a final attack in competitive draft environments.
