Where it came from
Sleep Paralysis was released in July 2019 as part of the Magic: The Gathering Core Set 2020. This card serves as a mechanical reprint and thematic successor to earlier blue enchantment spells designed to tap a creature and prevent it from untapping, functioning as a classic control tool used to neutralize significant threats on the battlefield.
The card features illustration by artist Wisnu Tan, who rendered the unsettling imagery of a figure trapped by intangible forces. The design aims to evoke the physiological sensation of sleep paralysis through its visual composition and mechanical function, grounding the abstract concept of a temporary lockdown within the game’s consistent fantasy framework.
