Where it came from
Sleeper Agent was originally printed in the 1997 Urza's Saga expansion for Magic: The Gathering, designed by Mark Rosewater as part of a cycle of cards that balanced powerful effects with significant drawbacks. Its inclusion in the 2007 Tenth Edition core set marked a return of the card to the standard rotation, serving as an aggressive, low-cost black creature that fits into hyper-aggressive decks due to its ability to damage the opponent while potentially forcing them to play it.
The artwork for the Tenth Edition printing was created by Kev Walker, a prominent illustrator for the game known for his dark, moody aesthetic. Walker's design for the Sleeper Agent leans into the card's parasitic nature, depicting a unsettling, shadowy figure that embodies the psychological and physical burden the creature places on its controller. Upon its release in Tenth Edition, the card was received as a niche but effective tool for black-aligned strategies, valued primarily for its efficiency in the early stages of a game.
