Where it came from
Sleep-Cursed Faerie was released as part of the Wilds of Eldraine expansion for Magic: The Gathering, specifically featuring as a promotional card. It draws from the set's thematic exploration of fairy tales and high-fantasy folklore, reimagining classic storybook tropes through the lens of a whimsical, treacherous wilderness. The design focuses on a mechanics-heavy approach to the 'sleep' or 'stun' motif, representing a character bound by an enchanted slumber.
The artwork was created by illustrator Manuel Castañón, whose work in the set emphasizes the eerie, ethereal aesthetic of the Eldraine plane. The card was designed to function as a powerful, low-cost threat that requires the player to manage a specific upkeep cost, reflecting the thematic weight of the faerie's curse. Upon release, it was noted by players for its efficient stat line and its synergy with artifact-heavy decks within the competitive meta.
