Slinking Skirge

Slinking Skirge was released in 1999 as part of Urza's Destiny, the final expansion in the Urza block for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, this set was designed to wrap up the narrative arc involving the artificer Urza and featured complex mechanics centered around artifacts and graveyard interactions. The card itself reflects the dark, atmospheric tone of the expansion, which sought to bring a sense of closure to the long-running storyline.

The card’s illustration was created by artist Heather Hudson, whose work defined much of the visual identity of late 90s Magic sets. She chose a visceral, gothic aesthetic for the Skirge, emphasizing its role as a parasitic creature within the game's lore. Upon its release, the card was received as a functional addition to black-aligned decks, recognized for its specific utility rather than widespread competitive dominance, eventually becoming a representative piece for collectors of the Urza's Destiny set.
