Tormented Angel

Tormented Angel was released in 1999 as part of Urza's Destiny, the final expansion in the Urza block for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. This set was designed to conclude the complex narrative arc surrounding the artificer Urza and introduced the white-aligned 'echo' mechanic, which forced players to pay a second casting cost on subsequent turns. The card reflects the set's high-fantasy aesthetic and the prevailing design philosophy of the era, which often emphasized powerful, high-cost creatures with specific drawbacks to balance their impact on the battlefield.

The artwork for Tormented Angel was created by illustrator Greg Staples. Staples, a prominent contributor to the game during the late 90s and early 2000s, utilized a dark, atmospheric style that aligned with the card's theme of spiritual unrest and lingering mortality. Upon release, the card was viewed primarily as a niche inclusion for casual white-aligned decks, serving as a mid-range flying threat that required careful resource management due to its echo cost, rather than a staple for competitive constructed play.
