Provenance

Where it came from

Sliver Queen was released in 1998 as part of the Stronghold expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As the first legendary creature to hold the rare five-color identity, it served as the apex predator for the Sliver creature type, which was introduced to allow players to create shared hive-mind abilities among their units. Its design reflected the set's focus on mechanical synergy and was intended to be the ultimate centerpiece for tribal-themed decks.

The card's striking illustration was created by artist Ron Spencer, known for his visceral and often grotesque depictions of fantasy creatures. Spencer chose to portray the Queen as a towering, insectoid matriarch, emphasizing her dominance within the hive structure. Upon its release, the card was widely received by players as a powerful build-around engine, and it has since maintained a significant presence in the game’s history due to its unique identity and distinct aesthetic.
