Where it came from
Evacuation was released in 1998 as part of the Stronghold expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As a blue sorcery, it was designed to serve as a board-clearing utility, allowing a player to return all creatures to their owners' hands. This effect provided a strategic reset button, particularly effective in control-oriented decks that sought to disrupt an opponent's momentum during the middle or late stages of a game.
The artwork was illustrated by rk post, a prominent figure in the game's visual history during the late nineties. His design for Evacuation captures a sense of chaotic displacement, utilizing a stylized, somewhat surreal aesthetic that characterized his contributions to the Stronghold set. Upon release, the card was received as a solid, functional piece of blue color-pie design, earning a reputation for its ability to invalidate wide board states without relying on permanent destruction.
