Where it came from
Sly Instigator was released in 2022 as part of the Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur's Gate set, a collaborative expansion between Wizards of the Coast and the Dungeons & Dragons franchise. The card was designed to support multiplayer gameplay, specifically leveraging the goad mechanic to force creatures to attack players other than the controller, thereby fueling chaos and reducing stalemates in the popular Commander format.
The card features artwork by illustrator Johannes Voss, who utilized his signature ethereal and vibrant style to depict the chaotic influence of the instigator. Within the context of the set, the design aims to capture the spirit of Dungeons & Dragons tabletop politics, emphasizing social maneuvering and strategic agitation. It was well-received by players looking for efficient, low-cost tools to impact the board state and manipulate combat dynamics in group games.
