Where it came from
Sly Requisitioner was released in 2017 as part of the Aether Revolt expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Set on the plane of Kaladesh, the card reflects the industrial and rebellious tone of the storyline, where artificers and inventors faced increasing oppression from a ruling consulate. The card was designed to support the 'Improvise' mechanic, which allowed players to tap artifacts to pay for the cost of spells, emphasizing the resourceful and scavenged nature of the local resistance movement.
The card was illustrated by Victor Adame Minguez, who depicted a scrap-heap scavenger amidst the metallic architecture of the city of Ghirapur. The artwork captures the character’s opportunistic role in the set’s narrative, focusing on the salvage of mechanical debris. Upon its release, the card was received as a functional utility piece within the Black-aligned color identity, noted for its ability to generate creature tokens whenever artifacts were sacrificed or destroyed, fitting neatly into graveyard-focused strategies.
