Smoke

The Smoke card originates from the 1993 Collectors' Edition for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. This set was produced by Wizards of the Coast as a gold-bordered reprint of the original Alpha and Beta core sets, designed to provide players with access to iconic, high-value cards for casual play and testing. Because the cards featured distinct gold borders and non-standard backs, they were never permitted for use in sanctioned tournament play, occupying a unique space in the game's history as a dedicated product for collectors and kitchen-table gamers.

The card itself features iconic artwork by Drew Tucker, whose impressionistic, watercolor-style illustrations helped define the dark, mystical aesthetic of the game's early years. Smoke is a continuous enchantment that forces players to pay additional mana to untap their creatures, reflecting the strategic complexity of early Magic design. While its power level in gameplay has fluctuated over decades of metagame shifts, Tucker’s atmospheric work remains a hallmark of the set’s visual identity, often appreciated for its moody, ethereal departure from standard fantasy tropes of the era.
