Where it came from
Smoky Lounge // Misty Salon was introduced in the 2024 Magic: The Gathering set Duskmourn: House of Horror. The card functions as a double-faced land, a design choice intended to evoke the shifting, labyrinthine architecture of the plane of Duskmourn, which manifests as an endless, malevolent mansion. This card belongs to a cycle of lands that tap for colored mana, reflecting the oppressive and eerie atmosphere of the set's horror-themed aesthetic.
The art direction for this card was crafted to lean into the nostalgic and unsettling tropes of 1980s horror cinema, which serve as the primary inspiration for the Duskmourn plane. The illustrations utilize a muted, cinematic color palette and architectural details that transition from an inviting, smoky social space to a disorienting, foggy interior. It was designed by the Wizards of the Coast team to provide players with functional utility while deepening the immersive environmental storytelling of the set.
