Smoldering Marsh

Smoldering Marsh was originally released in the 2015 Battle for Zendikar set as part of a cycle of allied-colored 'tango lands'—dual lands that feature basic land types and enter the battlefield tapped unless the player controls two or more basic lands. The card was designed to support multi-colored mana bases in various formats while maintaining a careful balance to avoid excessive speed in competitive play, leaning into the desolation theme of the Zendikar plane as it suffered under the influence of the Eldrazi titans.

The art for this specific printing, appearing in the Marvel Super Heroes Commander set, utilizes existing visual assets repurposed for the crossover theme. The design aesthetic draws on the grim, volcanic landscapes of the Magic: The Gathering multiverse, adapted here to fit the thematic integration of the Marvel brand. As a functional land card, it is valued by players for its utility in deck-building, providing consistent access to Black and Red mana while remaining searchable through cards that look for specific land types.
